Tommy Kuban, the starting catcher for the Columbia Roughnecks varsity baseball team the past two seasons, recently was honored by being named to the District 26-3A academic all district team. My nephew Tommy is the son of my sister, Kelli Gupton Kuban, of West Columbia and Chris Kuban. Junior outfielder-designated hitter Blaine Yaws and Tommy's fellow sophomores Colby Ryan and Jarrett Johnson were Roughnecks who garnered first team all district accolades. Sophomore Cole Moody and Julio Jimenez were the Roughnecks named to the all district second team. The Roughnecks, coached by my fellow Sam Houston State alum Jeff Shank, finished the 2009 baseball season in fourth place in District 26-3A with a 5-5 district mark and a 12-8-1 season record. It has been entertaining for my wife Peggy and I to attend as many of Tommy's baseball games as possible over the past two years. With our own sons Brian, Bret and Blake out of high school now and their high school baseball careers in their rearview mirrors, it is good to still have a family member involved in high school sports. Keep working hard Tomcat in improving your strength in the weightroom and honing your baseball skills in the offseason. Your Aunt Peggy and I are looking forward to following you and your fellow Roughnecks during the 2010 baseball season.
